Location and tracking

GPS306 model is embedded with GPS and doesn’t have support of GLONASS and alternative systems. It either doesn’t support Assisted GPS (A-GPS) technology. As the back-up, when no satellites signals are available, it uses Cell ID location (also known as LBS-tracking).

There are only two basic tracking modes, which do not provide too much flexibility: by time interval and by distance.

Also, the tracker supports turnings. It will update the positions automatically to web server once the vehicle changing driving direction over pre set angle (30 degrees) to form a smooth trajectory consistent with the actual road, this function is only effective in GPRS mode.

OBDII data

GPS306 can read from OBDII port such data as vehicle speed, engine RPM, coolant temperature, board voltage as well as “Check engine” (MIL) and DTC error codes. Here is an example of how it looks in GPS tracking system:

Mobile networks

With Quad-band GSM 2G module GPS306 can be operated all over the world.

Emergency button

GPS306 has a small SOS button. To send the SOS signal it’s required to hold the button pressed within 3 seconds.

Power supply

GPS306 uses OBDII Connector Type B and voltage range 9-40V, which makes possible to install GPS306 both on cars and trucks.

GPS306 also features a built-in rechargeable backup battery. When fully charged it ensures about 1-2 hours of device operation (in normal conditions).

When being unplugged from the OBDII socket the device sends notification to server.

Local and remote management

GPS306 tracker can be fully controlled over GPRS, including configuration of tracking modes and controlling outputs. There is also a wide list of SMS commands in a human-friendly format, on which device always replies back. It supports remote APN settings configuration by SMS.

You can also configure GPS306 from a PC, but you will require a special serial cable, which is not included into a standard package. No special software is required: device is detected as a flash drive and all configuration can be done by editing a text file on it.

LED Indication

GPS306 has two LEDs

  • Green  LED indicates GSM/GPRS mode

  • Blue LED indicates GPS reception

Additional features

GPS306 features a micro SD slot, so you can install a micro SD card into it and store all data there. Later you can analyze it, using proprietary software.

Also GPS306 features a built-in microphone for acoustic surveillance.

Disadvantages

GPS306 does not detect harsh driving behaviour and towing.

Server Integration
Server IP Address217.23.132.215
Server port47750

Coban GPS306 is tightly integrated with this software platform.

Activation process

Automatic activation (recommended)

The software platform supports automatic device activation by applying APN settings, server address and port, as well as recommended tracking mode though the SMS channel. Normally you don’t need to configure anything manually. Just install the SIM card, switch the device ON and make sure it is located in the place with good GPS signal reception.

When you activate a device, the following SMS commands are sent from server to device:

SMS command from
Server to Device
SMS reply from
Device to Server
Command
explanation
begin123456 begin ok! Activating device setup
apn123456 <apn_name>  APN ok  Set up APN name
up123456 <apn_login> <apn_pass> user, password ok! Set APN login and password
gprs123456  gprs OK! Enable GPRS mode
adminip123456 217.23.132.215 47750  adminip ok! Set up server address and port

Some parameters will depend on your cellular network operator:

  • <apn_name> – APN name
  • <apn_login> – APN login
  • <apn_pass> – APN password

As soon as these commands are executed the GPS tracker will connect to the server, and the rest of configuration process will be done via GPRS channel.

Important notice:

  • Do not set any password on the device (by default: “123456”)
  • Do not set any master number prior to the device activation
  • Do not set the Time zone, it must be UTC+0h as per default
  • Do not set any pin-code to your SIM card

Manual configuration

If you experience issues with the SMS delivery from the platform to device in your country, you can setup device manually by sending the above list of commands from your mobile phone.

Default settings

Tracking mode

By default tracking by distance (100m.) is set, as field tests show this is one of the most preferable tracking modes. However, you can change tracking mode remotely in “Device” section.

Rules

  • SOS button. When you activate a GPS306 device, the new rule “Emergency (SOS) button” is created automatically. That means the event will be logged by default and shown on the screen and in Monitor mobile application. If you want to get instant notifications by Email, SMS you should update contacts in this rule.

Coban

There is a native system provided by manufacturer with basic functionality at the website www.gpstrackerxy.com

Other

There are some other tracking platforms that support this device, including: GPSGate, Wialon, GPSwox and other.

    :

Bought 3pcs on AliExpress for $210 – quite a fair price, I believe. Already using it for a couple of weeks and it works well most of the time. However, sometimes I get parts of tracks lost off the map. Is it malfunction or… Will someone advise me plz?

      :

Hi, Francis8! In my opinion it could be lack of the GPS sensitivity or GSM connection issue. Try to figure this out and install a SD card – it will temprorarly store positions when your car moves out from the GSM coverage area. Hope it helps.

    :

Great tracker, no installation required! You just plug it into the diagnostic port of your car and forget it.

    The goods:
    + very easy to use
    + draws cute tracks

    The bads:
    – In my Peugeot Partner it does not show fuel related info

Before I buy it I had doubts about the quality vs price ratio. I’ve had this tracker for about 5 months and it’s nice and worth buying.
